A new poll shows U.S. Sen. John Sununu's favorability rating is at a low point as he prepares for a reelection bid.A WMUR/CNN poll of 524 residents found 43 percent had a favorable opinion of the junior senator, while 35 percent had an unfavorable opinion. Thirteen percent were neutral and 9 percent didn’t know enough about Sununu, the poll said.
The University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll, released Thursday night, was conducted between July 9 and 17.
Sununu's net favorability rating is at a low of 8 percent, down from 30 percent a year ago. That score is his lowest since he was elected in 2002, the poll said.
"A 22 percentage point drop in favorability ratings in the past year should be a wake-up call for Sununu," said Andrew Smith, director of the Survey Center. "The 2006 election showed Republican candidates must work harder to get their base to the polls to be successful.
"At the same time, perceived vulnerability from lower favorability ratings could attract strong Democratic opponents, such as former Governor Jeanne Shaheen."
Shaheen has not given any indication she will seek a rematch of the 2002 contest, which she lost to Sununu.
Sununu has faced criticism for his stance on Iraq, with critics charging he is too close to President Bush on war policy.
