Montana Senator Max Baucus is pushing members of the U.S. Congress to set up a permanent disaster assistance fund. The Democrat held a hearing to explore different ways of using the tax code to help agriculture producers. As it stands now lawmakers must fight for disaster assistance every year but Sen. Baucus says a permanent fund would ensure the money is there when producers need it.
"Earlier this year, Congress passed another disaster assistance package, but for some farmers, it was too little, too late. Producers still do not have any money from disasters from two years ago. For some producers who suffered from a disaster in 2005, payment may not come until early 2008."
