U.S. senator calls for damage assessment of beef bans

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) called for a review of the damage done to the American beef industry from bans by countries such as South Korea and Japan.According to the Yonhap News Agency, Baucus wrote to the International Trade Commission asking it to investigate the effects of food safety measures on U.S. beef trade with major trading partners.
Baucus is the chair of the Senate Finance Committee.
The investigation should include safety measures and other barriers to U.S. beef exports, such as high tariffs, quotas, import licensing and the distribution system, as well as an analysis of the economic effects of such barriers against U.S. meat exports, the letter said. Baucus said in the letter that the report should cover the period from 2002 to 2007.
