Udall has early fundraising lead

Colorado's 2008 U.S. Senate race is still in its early stages, but Democrat Mark Udall already has jumped ahead of Republican Bob Schaffer in fundraising.

Udall, a congressman from Eldorado Springs, reported this week that he raised more than $1.1 million from April through June, bringing his cash on hand to $2.5 million.

Schaffer, a Colorado Board of Education member and former congressman, announced Thursday that he'd raised $717,048 during the second quarter of this year, leaving him with $682,711 cash on hand.

Both contenders, who are unopposed for their parties' nominations to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Wayne Allard, put a positive spin on the numbers.

Udall campaign manager Mark Melanson said the total reflects Udall's deep support among middle-class and working families. The 10-year 2nd District congressman will continue to "provide strong, independent leadership for our state and country," Melanson said in a statement.
