Colorado's 2008 U.S. Senate race is still in its early stages, but Democrat Mark Udall already has jumped ahead of Republican Bob Schaffer in fundraising.Udall, a congressman from Eldorado Springs, reported this week that he raised more than $1.1 million from April through June, bringing his cash on hand to $2.5 million.
Schaffer, a Colorado Board of Education member and former congressman, announced Thursday that he'd raised $717,048 during the second quarter of this year, leaving him with $682,711 cash on hand.
Both contenders, who are unopposed for their parties' nominations to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Wayne Allard, put a positive spin on the numbers.
Udall campaign manager Mark Melanson said the total reflects Udall's deep support among middle-class and working families. The 10-year 2nd District congressman will continue to "provide strong, independent leadership for our state and country," Melanson said in a statement.
