Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin reported he has more than $2.6 million cash on hand in his bid for a fifth Senate term.

rss feedSpokesman Matt Paul said that's roughly double what Harkin had at this point in the 2002 election cycle, when he faced a stiff challenge from then-U.S. Rep. Greg Ganske. Harkin easily defeated Ganske to win another six-year term.
Steve Rathje, a Cedar Rapids businessman who has not previously sought public office, is the only Republican who has announced plans to seek Harkin's position. Federal Election Commission records did not show a disclosure report for Rathje in the period ending July 1, with those reports due July 15.
