Senator: Technology is key to area's future

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu brought her message of success for northeastern Louisiana to Monroe Friday.

At a luncheon hosted by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, Landrieu told the crowd the area's universities and farming industry can play a key role in a brighter future for the region.

Echoing the sentiments on which she has focused during much of her weeklong tour through northern and central Louisiana, Landrieu discussed technological advances at Grambling State University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana Tech University.

She said projects such as the effort in Bossier Parish to land an Air Force cyber command center, which would bring in thousands of jobs, could be utilized by the area colleges.

"All northern Louisiana universities have to lean forward to produce the kinds of graduates who will stand up this command," Landrieu said.

She also said farming, long an economic staple, will benefit from continuing research into alternative fuel sources such as ethanol.

"I think the future is in growing our own fuel," Landrieu said.
