Lautenberg raises $1.1M for campaign

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, up for re-election in November 2008, raised $1.1 million in the three-month fundraising period ending June 30, according to an early look at his campaign cash totals.His office released preliminary numbers Friday, two days before they are due at the Federal Election Commission, showing he has $2.9 million to spend. Those numbers could change because the New Jersey Democrat's campaign staff is tallying up campaign receipts.
No Democrat has emerged to challenge Lautenberg, who's seeking re-election to a fifth term.
Among Republicans, Anne Evans Estabrook, a Spring Lake businesswoman and former head of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, is forming an exploratory committee and could challenge Lautenberg.
Prominent Republicans such as former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie have indicated they are not interested in running. New Jersey hasn't sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972 when it elected Clifford Case.
