National Guard to honor Johnson

The National Guard Association of the United States has chosen South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson to receive its Charles Dick Medal of Merit for his long-term support of the guard.

Johnson, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, has repeatedly pushed to increase funding for National Guard benefits and equipment.

He played a key role last year in getting legislation passed that would permanently extend Tricare coverage to National Guard and Reserve members and their families, regardless of their mobilization status, the guard said.

The Charles Dick Medal of Merit was created in 1998 to recognize contributions to the National Guard by elected officials in state legislatures and Congress and by governors. Those contributions must have a lasting effect on the National Guard's future.
