Doherty quits Senate bid

One of three New Jersey Republicans who expressed interest in running for U.S. Senate has dropped out of the race.

Assemblyman Michael Doherty said Friday he was ending his bid for the seat and would throw his support behind Republican Assembly colleague Joe Pennacchio of Morris County.

"In order to ensure that the Republican Party is represented by a strong candidate having views that are consistent with the national Republican platform, I have decided to withdraw my name as a candidate for U.S. Senate," said Doherty, a Hunterdon County conservative.

Pennacchio said Friday he has not decided whether to challenge Democratic incumbent Frank Lautenberg in November 2008.
