War veterans form Merkley support group

Embroiled in a debate over his 2003 vote on an Iraq war resolution, Jeff Merkley has countered with "Veterans for Jeff Merkley," a group led by three men with high-profile military backgrounds.

Merkley, a Portland Democrat running for U.S. Senate, has tapped retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Tony McPeak, former U.S. Army Special Forces officer Jim Rassmann and Iraq war veteran Paul Evans to lead the group. Rassmann will serve as chairman, with McPeak and Evans serving as vice chairmen.

"Oregon needs a senator who will respect the courage and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform," Merkley said in a Monday news release about the group. "That means sending them on the right missions with the right equipment...and that means bring them home from Iraq as soon as possible."
