South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson spent his first week back on the job getting the lay of Capitol Hill - politically and physically - from a different perspective.The two-term Democrat returned to work Sept. 5, almost nine months after suffering a brain hemorrhage and recovering in the hospital and at home.
Since then, he's been getting used to maneuvering his electric wheelchair from his office to the Senate floor, attending his first Democratic caucus luncheon and going to his first committee meeting.
He made all 25 floor votes, including a marathon series of votes his second day back that ended around 10 p.m.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada isn't giving Johnson any slack, Reid spokesman Jim Manley said.
"We have a lot of work to do, and Senator Johnson understands that," Manley said. "He's ready to go."
