Mark Udall gave fellow Boulder County Democrats on Friday a list of some of the challenges he wants to tackle as a U.S. senator. Those, Udall said, include "ending a war" in Iraq "that's been constantly mismanaged" and "finding a way to rebuild our standing in the world."
Another is "creating an energy policy that provides jobs, gives us greater flexibility and, of course, protects our environment," Udall told the more than 300 people attending the Boulder County Democratic Party's annual Truman Dinner.
Yet another of those challenges, he said, is to "make health care accessible and affordable for all Americans."
Colorado is "really in the center of those challenges," Udall said, adding that "those are many of the reasons I want to - will - serve in the United States Senate starting in 2009."
Udall, who's midway through his fifth term representing Colorado's 2nd Congressional District, did not deliver a full-blown Senate campaign speech during the Friday dinner at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center. Instead, he enumerated his challenges-ahead list while introducing the night's featured speaker, state Treasurer Cary Kennedy.
Nor did Udall mention his likely Republican foe in next year's Senate contest, former 4th District Rep. Bob Schaffer of Fort Collins.
Neither Schaffer nor Colorado Republican Party chairman Dick Wadhams could be reached later Friday night for reaction to Udall's Truman Dinner remarks.
Udall and Schaffer are in a tight race for the Senate seat being vacated by Larimer County Republican Wayne Allard, according to a survey of Colorado voters released this week.
