DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones said he will run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss.

"I am seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate for Georgia," Jones told The Associated Press on Thursday.

He will officially kick-off his campaign as a "conservative Democrat" on Saturday in Marietta Square in Cobb County.

Chambliss is up for re-election next year. Jones must first face former WSB-TV investigative reporter Dale Cardwell, who announced his candidacy last month.

Elected in 2000 as DeKalb County's youngest and first black chief executive officer, Jones was re-elected in 2004. He also served eight years in the state legislature.

Jones, 46, is a native of Laurel Hill, N.C. He graduated from North Carolina Central University with a bachelor's degree in business administration and held leadership positions at MCI WorldCom and BellSouth Cellular.
